This book contains a collection of speeches that Amma gave in India between 1990 and 1999. As Amma reveals the truths of life in the light of spirituality and in a manner unassailable by logic, the reader is given not only a fresh view of life, but is inspired to live according to the universal principles that Amma explains in such a crystal clear way. Like a mother talking to her child, Amma rings profound principles to light through the simplest of words. In this book we are given compelling answers to the numerous questions that most of us have asked or have wanted to ask at one time or another. The reader will find that a few of the speeches contain the same examples or stories. These rare repetitions have been left as they are, because the examples are so beautiful and fit so marvelously into the context of the text, and because the editors didn’t want to tamper with Amma’s speeches in any way. Every sentence uttered by Amma helps us to understand the ultimate aim of life, and reveals paths to the realization of that goal. Amma’s words guide and encourage us towards a truly full and meaningful life.

Without verbal communication, human existence would be miserable. Exchanging ideas and sharing emotions are part and parcel of life itself. However, it is the silence that we acquire through prayer and meditation that really helps us find peace and true happiness in this noisy world of conflicting differences and competition. In normal every day life, where people have to interact and communicate in numerous situations, observing silence is dif-ficult. And even if our surroundings are conducive to quietude, remaining silent is not so easy. It can even drive ordinary human beings crazy. However, blissful silence is the true nature of divine personalities such as Amma. Watching Amma deal with various situations and people all over the world, I have seen the grace and perfection with which She switches from one mood to another. One moment, Amma is the supreme Spiritual Master and, the next, the compassionate mother. Sometimes She takes the mood of a child, at others of an administrator. After advising CEOs, award-winning scientists and world leaders, She simply gets up and walks to the darshan hall, where She receives and consoles thousands of Her children from all walks of life. Generally, Amma spends Her whole day—and most of Her night—comforting Her children, listening to them, wiping their tears, infusing them with faith, confidence and strength. Throughout all this, Amma ever remains in Her natural serene state. She never gets tired. She never complains. Her face is always aglow with that radiant smile. Amma the extraordinary in ordinary form dedicates every moment of Her life to others. What makes Amma different from us? What is the secret? From where does Her infinite energy and power come? Amma’s presence reveals the answer to these questions so clearly and tangibly. Her words reaffirm it: “The beauty of your words, the charm in your actions, the allure of your movements all depend on the amount of silence you create within.

The Guru Gita is a Hindu scripture. The verses of this scripture may also be chanted. The text is believed to be part of the larger Skanda Purana. The text of the Guru Gita describes a
conversation between the Hindu God, Lord Shiva and his wife, the Hindu Goddess Parvati, in which she asks him to teach her about the Guru and liberation. Shiva answers her by describing
the Guru principle, the proper ways of worshiping the Guru & the methods and benefits of repeating the Guru Gita.

Since 1968, Swami Paramatmananda Puri has lived the life of a renunciate in India, settling there at the age of nineteen, to imbibe the spiritual essence of that great and ancient culture. It has been his good fortune to have kept the company of many saints and sages over the years, culminating in his meeting with his Guru, Mata Amritanandamayi, in 1979. As one of her senior disciples, he was eventually asked to return to the U.S. to serve as head of the first ashram in the West, the Mata Amritanandamayi Center, where he remained in residence since from 1990 until 2001.
Many residents and visitors to the Center have shared that one of the high points in programs there have been Swami’s talks, encompassing Amma’s teachings, his experiences in India, his understanding of scriptural texts, and his life on the spiritual path. With wit and humour, he has synthesized East and West, and created a forum for spiritual learning for people from all walks of life. Originally available only on tape, his talks have now been transcribed, making these volumes a treasury of wisdom for years to come. These talks were recorded over twenty years ago. For this revised edition, Swamiji decided to rewrite the book in a more readable style.

For The Past 30 Years, Amma Has Dedicated Her Life To The Uplift Of Suffering Humanity Through The Simplest Of Gestures, An Embrace. In This Intimate Manner, Amma Has Blessed And Consoled More Than 30 Million People Throughout The World

Lead Us to Purity contains a selection of speeches that Amma give in India between 1990 en 1999. In these pages Amma is talking to ordinary people from all walks of life, who have come to be with her for special occasions: perhaps the inauguration of her cancer hospice near Mumbai, or to celebrate her birthday or Onam, the biggest holiday in Kerala. She talks to them and to us, the readers of this beauti-ful book – about the art of living a truly hap-py and fulfilling life. In her unique way, she explains the universal, spiritual principles in a simple, easily graspable, and yet profound way.

For the past 30 years, Amma has dedicated her life to uplift suffering humanity through the simplest of gestures—an embrace. In this intimate manner, Amma has blessed and consoled more than 30 million people throughout the world. Wherever she travels—be it in India, America or Europe—thousands flock to seek her boundless love and compassion, her solace and her wisdom.
From Amma’s Heart is a collection of Amma’s answers to questions asked during her programs in the West since 1999. Amma speaks on a vast range of topics, including the nature of birthand death, worldly relationships, war and peace, and spiritual practices and philosophy. No matter the question, Amma answers in her own inimitable earthy style—full of the love of a mother and the wisdom of a true spiritual master—presenting the most esoteric of spiritual truths in a manner so simple that even a child could understand.

This book contains the first part of a collection of Amma’s answers to questions on the principles of Sana-tana Dharma. These questions were raised by devotees on different occasions. We hope that this book will help to promote an understanding of the principles of Sana-tana Dharma Truth is One. The sages call it by different names.” This is the exalted message that the ancient civilization of India has given the world. The cause of all the cur-rent problems related to religion is the fact that we have forgotten this message. We may declare that the world has shrunk to the size of a village thanks to globalization and modern scientific innovations such as the Internet and satellite TV, but, at the same time, the distance between people’s minds is steadily increasing. The concept that India has given to the world – Vasudhaiva kutumbakam, “The whole world is my family” – is based on the fundamental oneness and actual mental unity of us all. The ultimate solution to our problems is to imbibe this principle of oneness. Even if we are unable to do this, we should at least culti-vate the attitude of respecting other people’s viewpoints and ideas. The world is in profound need of tolerance and understanding. The principles of Sanatana Dharma, the Eternal Principle, which have been expressed
in the words of the Rishis (Self-realized sages), are capable of leading us in that direction.

In this small book, Amma offers advice to Her children, especially to those who are living a family life. Mother’s words, which are practical, simple and filled with Her infinite wisdom,
offer guidance on how we can progress spiritually while engaged in family and career.
