This book contains a collection of speeches that Amma gave in India between 1990 and 1999. As Amma reveals the truths of life in the light of spirituality and in a manner unassailable by logic, the reader is given not only a fresh view of life, but is inspired to live according to the universal principles that Amma explains in such a crystal clear way. Like a mother talking to her child, Amma rings profound principles to light through the simplest of words. In this book we are given compelling answers to the numerous questions that most of us have asked or have wanted to ask at one time or another. The reader will find that a few of the speeches contain the same examples or stories. These rare repetitions have been left as they are, because the examples are so beautiful and fit so marvelously into the context of the text, and because the editors didn’t want to tamper with Amma’s speeches in any way. Every sentence uttered by Amma helps us to understand the ultimate aim of life, and reveals paths to the realization of that goal. Amma’s words guide and encourage us towards a truly full and meaningful life.

Samsara — the ceaseless flow of existence, characterized by the swirl of worldly life and by the cycle of birth, death and rebirth — is often likened to a sea. A seeker of Truth must crossthis vast realm of transmigration in order to attain moksha, spiritual liberation. The key to a successful crossing is ishwara kripa, God’s grace. How does one earn kripa? By clinging to God, the way a monkey clings to its mother? Or, as with a young kitten, by allowing the Divine Mother to pick one up by the scruff of one’s neck, as it were? By being both the monkey and kitten, i.e. by striving and surrendering, for they are different phases of the journey to God. Amma says as much. She defines the word ‘ashram’ (generally translated as ‘monastery’) as “aa shramam” — “that effort” (one makes to reach the spiritual goal). From this, it is clear that She endorses sadhana (spiritual striving). However, Amma time and again stresses that more than human effort, what one needs is divine grace. What exactly is grace? It is the X-factor that crowns struggle with success. It manifests as the noble impulse to do good and to turn Godward. Though intangible, kripa is palpable, as legions of devotees will affirm. This book is a testament to the waves of divine grace that have anointed their pilgrimage through life.

Amma is a wonder; everything about her is wondrous. This is the experience of the countless people who have met her. What is the secret of her charisma? Her abidance in the Divine and her ability to strike an instant motherly rapport with her children. This book is the first volume of the compilation of talks given by Amma’s monastic children, most of whom have lived with her for at least two decades. The talks recount
precious moments with Amma and reveal priceless pearls of spiritual understanding they have gleaned from those interactions. Every devotee has his or her own story of Amma to tell. The stories in this book are by some of those who, inspired by Amma, renounced worldly life to dedicate themselves to a life of spiritual practice and selfless service. This book is also an archive of life in Amritapuri, the nucleus of Amma’s mission and the hub from which her spiritual influence is radiating out towards the rest of the world. Reading it will give a finer appreciation of Amma’s epochal mission: uplifting humanity by reinstating the timeless values of loving and serving others
