Since 1968, Swami Paramatmananda Puri has lived the life of a renunciate in India, settling there at the age of nineteen, to imbibe the spiritual essence of that great and ancient culture. It has been his good fortune to have kept the company of many saints and sages over the years, culminating in his meeting with his Guru, Mata Amritanandamayi, in 1979. As one of her senior disciples, he was eventually asked to return to the U.S. to serve as head of the first ashram in the West, the Mata Amritanandamayi Center, where he remained in residence since from 1990 until 2001.
Many residents and visitors to the Center have shared that one of the high points in programs there have been Swami’s talks, encompassing Amma’s teachings, his experiences in India, his understanding of scriptural texts, and his life on the spiritual path. With wit and humour, he has synthesized East and West, and created a forum for spiritual learning for people from all walks of life. Originally available only on tape, his talks have now been transcribed, making these volumes a treasury of wisdom for years to come. These talks were recorded over twenty years ago. For this revised edition, Swamiji decided to rewrite the book in a more readable style.

Amma’s grace has made this book possible for the benefit
of all aspirants. Once we look beneath and beyond all the bustle and activity centered around Amma, we certainly get a glimpse of the depths of Her real nature and the thrill of it.
“I remember one of Amma’s answers to a woman during a Satsang who was complaining how hard it was for her
to share Amma with others, etc. Amma replied that a Guru is subtle like space, air, or water. If we try to grab and hold a bunch of air or water tightly in our fists, we will not be able to hold anything. Rather, if we open our fists or hearts wide,
the water (grace) will overflow our palm (heart)!”
Such Pearls are arranged in the book accordingly to help us recognize our true nature.
“Swamiji has spent years serving and studying under the direct guidance of God realized world-renowned Master Sri Mata Amritanandamayi Devi. This synergy of experience and contemplation has enabled him to distill the abstruse non-dualistic teachings of the Upanishads and present them lucidly. This book is a treasure that imparts Education for Life, which is a pressing need of the hour
for all college and university students.”

The fourth volume of on the Trail to Liberation, the complilation of talks given in Amma’s presence, is also the first collection of discourses by some of international residents of Amritapuri Ashram, many of whom have spent decades with her. The articles, in this volumes reveals the profound influence that Amma’s teachings have had on people from diverse culturese and walks of life.
This influeces, in turn, indicates the universal relevance of Amma’s teachings – of love and compassion towards all, of walking the path of dharma (righteousness), and of respecting and revering Mother Nature, among others.

As the previous volume of this series, this, too, is a compilation of talks given in Amma’s physical presence. To discourse on the Truth while sitting next to its embodiment can be daunting. It is akin to man telling God the secrets of His creation. It seems presumptuous but it’s not so. Being in Amma’ sacred, presence or even anticipating it is affecting in ways the conscious mind can never quite understand. As Amma put it, the mind is ‘in Satsang’ – in the presence of the Truth – even while preparing for a talk. The speaker knows that the talk is not the place for self- glorifications, because it is a joyful experience. It is deeply intimate, because it is nothing less than a baring of one’s souls to the knower of all souls. Sharing one’s insights with other children of the Divine Mother is also a form of fellowship with kindred souls who share similar spiritual aspirations. We hope this volume will also bring you, dear reader, closer to Amma- closer to truth.

“Even greater a miracle than lifting a mountain,” says Amma, “is the love the gopis had for Lord Krishna.” How did the gopis develop this love? What is it that bound their hearts and minds unconditionally to the divine? Similar is the case with Amma’s children.
Infinite are the forms that Amma has taken to awaken divine love in our hearts that triumphs all sorrows. In every encounter Amma reveals that even if we may physically be apart, her embrace is eternal.
These testimonies by Amma’s children from all corners of the world give us a glimpse of the depth of Amma’s compassion that transcends all natural and manmade limitations. They echo the immutable truth of Amma’s promise to all: “Amma is always with you.”

“Spirituality is the science that teaches us how to live happily in the world,” Amma says, and these recollections of devotees’ experiences reveal how Amma has guided them to uncover this secret knowledge that lies dormant in our hearts.
Amma’s every glance, every touch, every word, literally every thought arising from her presence reveals an intimacy with her that transcends the limitations of time and space. It is through this deep connection that Amma guides us out of the mire of worldliness and into the realm of overflowing love.
Having been touched by Amma’s love, the soul yearns for an ever-expanding heart, just as a tree reaches for the sky — and suddenly we realize that our lives have been transformed. Evolving through selfless action and contemplation, Amma’s children awaken to their mother’s call: “Amma bows down to all of you, who are embodiments of pure
love and the supreme self.”

“Whether we laugh or cry, days will pass by. So why not choose to laugh?” Amma says, “Happiness is a decision.” Many of Amma’s children have faced tremendous hardships in both material as well as spiritual life. This teaching of Amma’s may be one of the most profound and at the same time one of the most difficult to accept. Is happiness really a choice?
This book contains the transformational journeys of twenty-five of Amma’s children. Every story is real. Every child is unique. So many struggled hard to open up to receive Amma’s pure and selfless love. Yet somehow an inner transformation started the moment Amma touched their lives, and each person in their own time eventually became receptive to her love and grace.
Accepting Amma’s love and grace is always a turning point in everyone’s life. As we read these chronicles that her devotees have offered in love, it removes any doubts that we too can grow into a life filled with love. Therefore let’s laugh with enthusiasm and follow Amma’s loving clarion call: “My children, happiness is a decision.

This book is a continuation of the meditation on Amma’s teachings and the timeless Upanishadic wisdom that began in the first volume. The primary topic here is on how to live free, being centered in our True nature. The greatest example of one who lives centered in Awareness(Sthitaprajna) is our Divine mother Amma.
The path to transcending the ego’s illusion of separa-tion lies in self-awareness and recognition. It calls for a profound shift in perspective, a shift from ego-centeredness to a recognition of our essential oneness with all that is. It invites us to look within, to inquire into the nature of the self, and to question the validity of our perceived separateness. “ Similar pointers to one’s Self can be found scattered all through the book. Use this book as a contemplation, a continual reminder to stay rooted in your True nature.
